Daily Life with a Penile Implant: Sport, Travel, MRI and Airport Questions
Does a penile implant set off airport security? Is MRI possible? Sport, swimming, sauna and everyday life with a penile prosthesis — the most common practical questions.
Men considering a penile implant do not only ask about the operation; what they really want to know is what everyday life with the device will be like. The good news: once healing is complete, a penile implant is not a device that restricts daily life. This article answers the most frequent practical questions.
Does a penile implant set off airport security?
Modern penile implants contain very little metal, and the device generally does not trigger airport metal detectors. Body scanners may visualise the device; a brief explanation is sufficient in that case. Patients who wish can carry a patient identification card with the device details — frequent travellers find this practical. Since the device is not visible from the outside, no one notices it in everyday life.
Can I have an MRI with a penile implant?
The great majority of penile implants in use today are compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Before any scan, however, you should share your device's brand and model with the imaging team, who will confirm the scanning conditions against the manufacturer's information. There are no special restrictions for computed tomography or X-ray.
Can I do sport?
Once the healing period is complete and your surgeon approves, there is no obstacle to walking, running, swimming, fitness training and similar sports. For activities with direct perineal pressure, such as cycling, an appropriate saddle and gradual progression are advised. In contact sports, standard groin protection is sufficient. Because the device sits within the tissue, it is not damaged by ordinary sporting loads.
Sea, pool, sauna and Turkish bath?
Yes, once wound healing is complete. The prosthesis is unaffected by water, heat or chlorine. During the healing period, staying away from pools and the sea for the time your surgeon specifies is important to reduce infection risk.
Will my partner notice?
With inflatable implants, the penis keeps its natural appearance and softness when deflated, and the erection feels close to natural. Many patients' partners do not notice the device unless told. This subject is discussed openly at the pre-operative consultation; no question should feel off-limits.
What should I pay attention to in daily use?
- Using the device as taught, without forcing it
- Keeping annual follow-up appointments
- Seeking care without delay if pain, swelling, redness or a change in function is noticed
- Maintaining control of accompanying conditions such as diabetes
